Wanda in Chongming Takes Shape | Firm-light®-Coated Glass Roofs Set a New Low-Carbon Benchmark for Commercial Complexes

Release time:

Aug 26,2026

The photovoltaic project at Wanda Plaza on Chongming Island in Shanghai has been successfully completed! Addressing four major industry challenges—large-scale, transparent glass rooftops, limited load-bearing capacity, the prohibition of drilling that could compromise waterproofing, and the need to preserve architectural aesthetics—Cando has delivered a comprehensive lightweight PV solution: deploying 620W LightSteel® series modules across the entire roof area, without compromising the existing structure. This achieves a seamless integration of power generation, waterproofing, and aesthetic appeal in this bustling commercial landmark, setting a benchmark for glass-roofed commercial complexes in Shanghai.

Chongming Wanda Plaza features an expansive tempered‑glass roof. Traditional photovoltaic solutions face significant limitations in this setting: glass curtain walls have limited load‑bearing capacity, and rooftop reinforcement entails substantial costs; drilling and nailing into the glass roof can puncture the glass’s waterproofing layer, posing a long‑term risk of leakage; moreover, as a prominent urban commercial landmark, the mall must preserve its transparent, minimalist aesthetic. Adding to the challenge, Chongming’s coastal location—characterized by high humidity and strong sea winds—demands exceptionally robust weather resistance from the modules and stringent aging‑resistance standards for the bonding systems.

In this project, Cando’s self-developed 620W Firm-light® series modules are used across all scenarios, weighing only 5.9 kg/m² and requiring no structural reinforcement. The installation method—using rails combined with adhesive—eliminates the need for drilling or penetration throughout the process, fully preserving the original waterproofing layer of the glass roof and thereby eliminating the risk of leakage in the mall atrium at its source, while also perfectly avoiding the various hazards associated with drilling. The product’s four-sided anti-dust design further reduces the frequency and costs of post‑project maintenance. In terms of safety and reliability, the Firm-light® series is the world’s first lightweight rigid module to receive TÜV Rheinland Grade AAA certification, and the entire system has undergone comprehensive testing for pull-out resistance, wind pressure, and weather resistance. It is compatible with glass skylights in shopping malls, office buildings, and exhibition halls nationwide, and well-suited for the renovation of existing urban retail spaces, offering exceptional replicability.

The project will provide Wanda Plaza with a continuous supply of green, self-generated electricity, reducing operational costs while enhancing building insulation and cooling, thereby alleviating air-conditioning loads and further cutting energy consumption. From a social responsibility perspective, the project helps Wanda establish a green urban landmark and elevate its commercial offerings. ESG Image.

As a pioneering enterprise in lightweight photovoltaics, Cando leverages its two core technology platforms—Lightsteel® and Solar Cloth—to continuously overcome the challenges of deploying traditional PV systems on specialized roof types: glass curtain walls, aging low-load industrial buildings, steel-structure skylights, and recreational vehicles, Low-altitude eVTOL , including aerospace photovoltaic wings, all have mature implementation cases. Cando will help more urban commercial buildings achieve “zero renovation, easy deployment, and long-term power generation,” leveraging photovoltaic technology to drive cities’ low-carbon transformation.
